Vitamin C with bioflavonoids (such as rutin and hesperin to assist in strengthening the mucous lining of the nasal areas): take 2000 to 3000 mg in powder or tablet form, twice a day, or more often if symptoms are severe.
Two garlic and horseradish tablets, twice a day (or three times a day if symptoms are severe). (These tablets can often be found containing, fenugreek, which is also helpful.) A tablet made from echinacea, cats claw and astragalus will boost the immune system. Take one tablet morning and evening all through winter. Double the dose if you feel a flu coming on. A tonic made from the same herbs is even better.
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)
The root of this herb has been used for many hundreds of years in traditional Chinese medicine. It is a well-respected plant as a tonic to assist (energy) and blood nutrition, particularly for enhancing the immune system related to long-term chronic infections. It is a must in the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome and is wonderful to use after chemotherapy, surgery and any viral infections. I would also recommend this herb to strengthen immunity if you are travelling in countries where health and hygiene levels are poor.
If using a tonic, include liquorice, elecampane, thyme and a little ginger and peppermint. If you are not using a tonic, take a liquorice capsule in conjunction with the herbal immune booster tablet. Liquorice is a wonderful natural antiinflammatory for the lungs. It also gives energy to the exhausted adrenal glands that become depleted in times of stress.
Fresh organic peppermint tea with a little cut fresh ginger or a pinch of ginger powder added to the drink.
